Scarlet Elf Cup

Scarlet Elf Cup is a fungus which grows singly or in groups on the buried or partly buried wood of deciduous trees. Its appearance is an indication that spring is not far away and  has been described as "a welcome sight after a long desperate winter".

As the name suggests its bright colour and distinctive shape make it quite easy to spot.   This particular one was growing on its own and was photographed in late February in Chatelherault Country Park.
